A Step by Step Guide to Find Your Purpose in Life

Everybody has a purpose in life. There is a reason for everybody to be born. Some people realize their role in this world quickly and get into action right away while most people do not understand it their whole life. It is not easy to find your purpose in life. Most people, when asked about their purpose in life will give vague answers like: being a good parent; being a good person. But these are not the things that you were especially born for. Yes, who doesn’t want to be a good person. The thing is..being a good person is something everyone wants to be. Its just a good characteristic, NOT a purpose in life. You should find your purpose in life that is made especially for you, a purpose that is more than yourself.

Zig Zagler, a motivational speaker wrote in his book “Over the Top”: “you will never succeed as a wandering generality, you must become a meaningful specific.” So if you really want to find your purpose in life that is specific to you, just follow these three steps.

First Step: Stop Being a Puppet

Most of you who fail to find your purpose in life are being controlled by other people. They may be your parents, your guardians or your teachers. A good advice from them is obviously invaluable. What I am talking about is that most people let parents and teachers control their decisions of their future careers and goals. Instead of doing what they want themselves, people just do what their parents and other people expect them to do. If you want to find your purpose in life, you should stop being a puppet to them. Listen to valuable advice now and again from elders but do only what you want to do! Otherwise you will be constantly bombarded by different opinions from different people and that will only leave you more confused of your goal in life.

Remember that your personal and spiritual growth is your own responsibility. So you should block out all the instructions you are getting from around you and just listen to the voice coming from your heart. When you have successfully done this, you can move on to concentrate on building the skill which will help you find your purpose in life

Step Two: List Your Thoughts and Listen to Them

This is the most important thing you need to do in order to find your purpose in life that is specific to you. You need to start listening to yourself instead of others and what better way to do so than list your thoughts down in a diary or a journal? Benjamin Franklin once said: “If you’re not to be forgotten when you’re dead and rotten, either do things worth writing about or write things worth reading about.” This advice was followed by many successful and famous personalities in history because a written record of their thoughts and opinions were kept in personal letters and journals.

In our everyday routine, countless thoughts are revolving in our minds. These are the thoughts that you want to listen to to find your purpose in life. If they are flowing through your mind when you are at work or busy somewhere else, you won’t be able to answer your thoughts later in the day as you would forget it by then. To overcome this problem, you need to write down your thoughts. Writing is a focused exercise of your mind that puts together your thoughts and organizes them in a clear manner so that it can be understood. So start writing your thoughts and answers to questions like “What’s the one thing that I want people to remember me for?” or “What’s the one thing that I want to accomplish before I die?” As you get into the habit of listening to your thoughts and answering the questions that come to your mind, you will start to get much closer to find your purpose in life that is specific to you.

Third Step: Seek Out Your Purpose, It Won’t Seek You

A great writer Jack London once stated: “You can’t wait for inspiration to come to you, you must go after it with a club.” The same statement holds true if you want to find your purpose in life. You have to go out, work hard and find your purpose in life rather than waiting for it to be found automatically. You should research and seek out materials on things that you are interested in the most and want to make them your future. Anything that you want to do with your life, chances are that other people have already done something similar.

So become a regular reader and researcher of the fields and goals you are interested in and keep listing down your thoughts and you’ll be on your way to find your purpose in life.
